Audi is a German automobile manufacturer that designs, markets, produces, distributes and engineers luxury cars. The company had a complex background. August Horch (the founder of Audi) started two smaller companies in the early 20th century, it them joined forces with two other manufacturers; this lead to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern era of Audi began in the 1960s after Auto Union was acquired by Volkswagen – from there the rest is history.
The company name is based on the Latin translation of the founder’s surname. “Horch” means “listen” listen in German and then becomes “audi” in Latin. The iconic four rings on the emblem represents one of four manufacturing companies that banded together to create the Auto Union – the predecessor of Audi.
Audi’s slogan is “Vorsprung durch Technik”, translating to “Advancement through Technology”.
